1665 Map of the World by Athanasius Kircher Reviews
Athanasius Kircher was a 17th century scholar who published works in the fields of geology and medicine as well as studying the Orient. He was also credited for inventing the first megaphone. An early studier of Egyptian hieroplyphs, he is considered the founder of Egyptology. Kircher has been compared to Leonardo da Vinci based on his inventions and vast depth of his works. This Map is from Kircher's "Mundus Subterraneus". It shows sectional views of the earth's internal magma & volcanic action at the surface. When most people first imagine an antique map, it is one like this that springs to mind. Designed to be more decorative than utilitarian, world maps, like this, are a popular part of many classical decorating schemes.
