Colton 1855 Antique Map of Illinois Reviews

Other Picture

This beautiful hand-colored map was created by Joseph Hutchins Colton, a prominent publisher of atlases in the United States. During the years of the early 1830's to 1890, the Colton family atlases were the finest produced during the 19th century. By the late 1850's, the Colton's were also publishing guidebooks, and immigrant & railroad maps. In the 1860's, the firm was renamed G. W. & C. B. Colton, when Colton was succeeded by his sons, George Woolworth and Charles B. Colton. The Colton family of cartographers continued to publish maps and atlases until 1892. If you are looking for an unusual piece of art, to decorate a home or office, these truly limited-edition prints are perfect. Antique maps are extraordinary examples of the 19th Century printing and engraving arts. As conversation pieces they are unequaled. Each beautiful old map is an actual snapshot of our history. Any of these, increasingly rare, works of art are also some of the most thoughtful (and personal) gifts you can give. Unlike so many other gifts, antique maps and prints allow you to present someone a piece of their past.
